What’s not to love about Bishop? There’s the dinosaur egg-shaped boulders, the free and plentiful hot springs, and, of course, Erick Schat’s amazing bakery in town. But, well, the camping in “The Pit” leaves something to be desired.

OVERVIEW

If you want to get away from the large gravel pit filled with puffy coats, crash pads, and all-night partiers, check out the BLM camping just a few minutes up the road towards the Owens River Gorge. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views, some peace and quiet, and incredibly easy access to many of the sport climbing destinations in Owens.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Dispersed camping on BLM land means no bathrooms, no running water, and no barbecue rings or picnic tables. So, pack it in, pack it out. Be sure to be up to date on Leave No Trace practices.

DIRECTIONS

GPS Coordinates to the area: 37°31'21.6"N 118°34'36.6"W

From Bishop, CA, head north on HWY 395 to the Paradise Swall Meadows exit and turn right. Drive up the road and make a left when you reach a “T” intersection. From here, continue up the road past the parking pullouts for the climbing areas. You’ll start to see a number of places to pull off and set up your own little slice of paradise before too long.
